How does the TPI screen relate to my golf performance? Why does it matter?

An efficient and powerful golf swing is a mix of the right amount of mobility, stability, strength, and power. Going through the TPI screen highlights where you might be limited in your ability to move (mobility and stability) which could translate to a reduced ability to produce strength and power. Think of it like driving a car with the emergency brake on, you can still go forward just not as fast and without damage. The screen helps us take the brake off your body and your swing.
How do you determine what exercises are best for me and my golf game?

The initial TPI screen is the key to determining the best starting point for exercises in your program. Going through the screen as well as needs analysis and performance testing helps the trainer prioritize what to focus on during different phases of your program.

Additionally, your fitness coach is always observing, asking for feedback, and assessing how you are doing. This allows them to adjust the program going forward to include new exercises or progressed versions of your program. 
What equipment will I need?

During your TPI screen, the only equipment you will need is a golf club (ideally a five iron) and a chair or bench. If you don’t have a golf club, a broomstick or long dowel will work too.

During the screen you’ll discuss what equipment you’ll have access to and where you plan to train most of the time (home, gym, club, etc). From there, your TPI fitness coach will design your program to fit your needs and tailor it to the equipment you have access to. Your coach can of course make recommendations for new equipment as well if you are interested in adding to your gym.

Lastly, if you are traveling and working out in a new location or for any reason you don’t have access to your normal equipment, the coach can always adjust those workouts.
What does the TPI screen entail? What do I need to do?

The TPI screen consists of 16 movements your coach will guide you through. The movements are not meant to be intense or fatiguing, they focus on assessing how well you move relative to key aspects of your swing. All you need to do is come dressed in comfortable, athletic attire that allows you to move freely. Your coach will handle the rest.
What will my program focus on?

This will be unique for everyone and depends on the results of your initial assessment. Based on the screen, the program could focus on corrective exercises that either improve mobility in your shoulders and hips for better rotation or exercises to help create better core stability leading to more transfer of force from the ground to the club head. The program will also focus on increasing your strength and power, particularly in exercises that directly transfer to the swing and a potential increased ball speed and drive.
Will I be able to adjust my workouts if something doesn’t feel right?

Absolutely! We want to make sure the program feels right and you feel comfortable in performing the exercises. While you are training, if anything doesn’t quite feel right or you just have a question on how to perform an exercise, let your coach know and they can either adjust the movement or provide the guidance you need.
How does golf fitness training differ from traditional personal training?

Traditional personal training tends to be focused on health, longevity, weight loss or strength gains. Golf fitness training can support those outcomes but the ultimate goal of the program is to improve your performance on the course. The exercises and intensities selected will be used to help you move better during the swing, improve your strength to maintain position, and or increase your power to hit the ball further.
How will I communicate with my TPI Fitness Coach?

You will be able to communicate with your TPI fitness coach however you prefer to connect (email, text or phone calls). The coach will answer any questions, recommend new workouts or adjustments to current ones, and send pictures or videos to provide absolute clarity to your question.
What does it mean to be a TPI coach?

The Titleist Performance Institute is the world’s leading certifying body. TPI Certification teaches golf, fitness and medical professionals how to evaluate a golfer for physical limitations which can inhibit swing efficiency, durability and, ultimately, enjoyment of the game.

TPI coaches can evaluate a player’s physical capabilities using the TPI screen and understand how the results of that assessment are correlated with the technical elements in the player’s swing. Our golf fitness professionals design the programs to include exercises specific to developing golf specific strength and power. Over the last couple of decades, 25,000 people have been certified across 63 countries.
Would the trainer be able to connect with my golf pro?

Of course! Just like any athlete, you want everyone on your team working together. Your fitness coach will be able to share the focus of your program, the results of your screen and the plan for progression with your golf pro. In turn, it will be great for the fitness coach to hear from your pro what they are working on with you so it can be supported in your program.
